How a pass works

Think like a weaver. Read the draft, prepare the shed, then let the shuttle travel. Taps are limited, so plan before you touch a thread.

Read the squares

Yellow cells mean those warps should sit high. Dark cells mean those warps stay low for the coming weft.

Tap to raise or lower

Each cyan thread is a warp. Tap it to flip its heddle. Raised threads hold the weft above them; lowered threads let it slip underneath.

Watch the red shuttle

When the shed matches the next required row, the shuttle crosses and a new line of cloth appears. The draft then asks for a different setup.

Spend taps with care

Later patterns add more threads and force repeated state changes. Prepare the whole row before the shuttle moves — wasted taps end the attempt.

Short sessions, rising thread counts, and a pattern that only exists if every pass is exact.

Thread control

You operate a traditional loom: individual warps, not a paint bucket. Every lift and drop is a decision the cloth will remember.

Changing sheds

The required arrangement is never static. After one successful pass, the next row wants a new combination of raised and lowered threads.

Tap economy

Each level gives a tap budget. Flip only what must change. Extra motion is cloth you never get to weave.

Growing drafts

Early boards use a handful of warps. Later designs stretch the loom and demand several state changes before the shuttle is allowed across.
